HISTORY
There
are many sites of historical interest within the estate,
including
Dere Street, constructed
by the Romans in the late 1st century AD to link the
legionary fortress of York (Eburacum) and Inchtuthil, near
Perth. Dere Street remained the principal north-south route
for armies for several centuries thereafter. A section of it
is incorporated in
St
Cuthbert's Way long
distance path.
Monteviot House, home of the Chief of
Clan Kerr, the 13th Marquis of Lothian.
The house overlooks a sweeping curve of the River Teviot.
The present house began as a lodge built by the 1st Marquis
in the early 18th Century and was added to by successive
generations Both the house and garden are open to the

The
Waterloo Monument, standing on the
summit of Penielheugh. It is a stone Doric column 150 feet
high, built by the 6th Marquis and his tenantry.to
commemorate the Duke of Wellington's victory over Napoleon.
The wooden gallery and spire were added by the 8th Marquis.
For a nominal charge you can borrow a key from the Estate
Office and climb the internal stairs to this viewing
platform.
Ferniehirst Castle, Scotland's
Frontier Fortress, standing high
above the the Jed Water, a mile and half south of Jedburgh.
A peel
tower built here in 1470 was destroyed in the
course of many bloody battles. Today's Ferniehirst is based
on a late 16th Century building, carefully restored by local
craftsmen. It is open to the public each July to coincide
with the local
Jethart Festival. To learn more
