MAINTENANCE Maintenance is an ongoing task on any estate, and with the diversity of geography and of building styles, it is a particular challenge here. For example, the majority of the original houses on the Estate are stone-built in a traditional style, with extended eaves and dormer windows. While they are attractive to look at they are expensive to maintain. The estate has to balance the need for replacement windows, greater insulation and so on against the rental incomes achievable in the Borders. The Estate retains its own Works Department to carry out many of the day-to-day repairs and improvements, working closely with local tradesmen on specialist tasks. |

| As well as woodland management, the Estate's Forestry Department has responsibility for the safety of all roadside trees within its boundaries. In addition the team carries out fencing and hedging maintenance and improvements, and ensures that rights of way and walking routes are passable. | ||
